Spoiler Free Review
I signed up for a “Pick it for me” challenge in Goodreads and my buddy picked this book for me. And it seemed magical when folks from another group also came forward to buddy read this one!
Well, I was excited. Read faster (32 pages per day) than usual (24 pages per day) to feel incomplete after the read.
The story’s premise was quite ingenious, keeping me invested in it with always a few questions running in my mind. The author had written the book really well (until a certain point) withholding information for the best effect, revealing just enough to keep us wanting for more and not irritating us!
The book showed great promise, but the ending fell short. I’m used to incomplete endings, open endings, sad endings, surprise endings, wholesome endings and just plain bad endings. This one was just off its mark. This was an unexpected ending that wasn’t welcome.
It’s weird. After reading the book, I just had one questions, “What was the book supposed to be about?”
Personally, I just felt that the book should’ve ended at Part 5 (out of 6).
The characters were great, but I couldn’t find any character development apart that from Klara’s. There honestly wasn’t much character development. But, each character’s traits were revealed along with the story. The characters hadn’t developed, we just learn more about them from their past and Klara’s observations.
What I really liked about the book:
I loved the setting of the story. And the atmosphere and vibes of the story all through until Part 4 was surreal, sometimes creepy, disturbing, warm, loving! A bag of meaningful emotions!
What I didn’t like about the book:
The ending. Hands down, the ending. It was lacklusture.
I don’t think there’s anything else that irks me more.
In the end, the story felt like a wonderful chocolate icecream topped with bleach.
I’m not sure to whom I can recommend this book. If you love Kazuo, or just like reading for the sake of reading, I guess you can pick this up.
Damn! I have no recollection of ever writing such a strong review for any book! This is disturbing. Or perhaps was Mr Kazuo intending a reaction like mine? A bitter aftertaste? If so, he did succeed!
Well, perhaps you can read and let me know!
I Would Rate it:
